  1. Hmm, let's take a step back first and ask ourselves why Idols in general in Japan are popular. Biggest reasons, a) the music/voices, b) they're cute (appearance/personality/whatever). In general, it's considered pretty normal to have a favorite singer or w/e right?

Now coming back to the issue at hand, I don't know that there even really is a "craze." I mean, it's mostly only a "craze" among Otaku, who are a small percentage of the population. In general, I don't think Vocaloid popularity comes close to certain top singer popularity.

Putting this aside for now as well, why is Vocaloid popular? In addition to the 2 reasons for real Idols, there's kind of the nice concept that composers who are unknown, and thus can't get anyone to sing for them can use Vocaloid to present their talent to the world. Most of the songs in this concert were composed by previously unknown persons. Some of the songs are quite good. Here's a song I like composed by ryo of supercell and sung by a real singer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yos2eki0_dA Ryo was discovered through his Vocaloid compositions.

Now one might think things like, "Vocaloids aren't real though." Well imagine a fan's point of view: To a fan, a Vocaloid is as real as a real Idol is ever going to be. Minus the paparazzi stuff of course-but these idol personalities' personal lives really are private to begin with and shouldn't be anyone's business other than their own.

So honestly, there definitely are people who are crazy obsessed about Vocaloids. But there are also people who are crazy obsessed about real Idols. And I think neither obsession is that much "scarier" than the other. It just happens. Sometimes the really scary "fans" do terrible things to their idol, too. Certainly would be more socially acceptable if people would keep a solid foot in reality. But hey, just because you go to a concert for a singer you like doesn't mean you're crazy obsessed with them. I'm sure many of the people at this concert are relatively average people.

  2. Faruk... you crack me up XD
Excellent defense. I still have to go with Tiffy on this one, though. That Miku boy in Japan still makes me shake my head.

  3. Note, I did say "there definitely are people who are crazy obsessed about Vocaloids". There's always people who will take things-anything-too far.
